This is the unique original Gouache painting by Severino Baraldi.

President Theodore Roosevelt ordered the army to take over the construction of the Panama Canal so a soldier called George Washington Goethals (left portrait) took over the building of the canal. Despite numerous landslides he finally finished the task.

Thousands of people flocked to see the new wonder of the world, the Culebra Cut. They were carried to safe viewing by special trains but even from a considerable distance the noise was deafening, especially from the distant explosions.

Right portrait is of Colonel David du Bose Gaillard, of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Gaillard was placed in charge of the central district of the canal, which stretched from Pedro Miguel Locks to the Gatun Dam, and dedicated himself to the job of getting the Culebra Cut, as it was then known, excavated.
