The Story of Scotland: At the Hammer's Mercy. The tragic aftermath of the death of Alexander III. Top left Norham Castle where John Balliol did homage to King Edward I (1239-1307).

Top centre: the Coronation Chair in Westminster Abbey under which is The Stone of Scone taken from Scotland by Edward. Top right there were so many people killed by Edward's men that the bodies became a danger to health.

The main panel, drawn wonderfully by Dan Escott in the style of the day, shows the weapons and armour used.. Balliol had been persuaded by the Scottish Estates to form an alliance with France following Edward's harsh treatment of the country.

This is the original artwork from Look and Learn no. 366 (18 January 1969).
